IGGY AZALEA _ SURVIVE THE SUMMER _ Bop or flop ??? Lit or skip ??? She throws shade at Nicki Minaj / Is she appropriating hip hop music ???

 

After have pushed back the release date of her E.P during weeks and weeks, Iggy Azalea finally revealed Survive the summer ! Not a moment too soon !!! And it is with a very great team that Iggy decided to come back. In featuring there's Wiz Khalifa, with who she already collaborated on Fast and furious soundtrack as well as the talented Tyga. She's decided not to be buried alive. But what is the major challenge of this E.P for the Australian rapper ? Does Survive the summer is meant to survive 2018's summer ? 

Rewind. Remember 2014's summer. Work, Fancy & Black Widow broke every single record that year.The performer herself was the first white woman to mark rap history. But in reality Iggy Azalea did'nt really arrived at the good moment. Indeed this decade seen the Birth of a lot of afro american protest movements as well as artists partisanship as Beyoncé.  If Iggy really met success in a first time, it did'nt last very long. Hip hop fans accused her of black culture's appopriation. Then began a witch hunt. Rappers all joined forces like Drake, Snoop, Nicki or Azalea Banks.

After a scrapped album, labels problems and a total boycott, is Iggy able to bounce back (i'm not talking about her ass)? Did she concentrated on music making or butts showing. Last chance album is he bop or flop ??? Good question. The answer is down below.

SURVIVE THE SUMMER 😌😌😌

I must say the begining song is fire. Survive the summer (8/10), the self titled song, gives the album tone. Futuristics snares, dirty basses, piano ; you can find some everywhere on this album and that's the "Ljay Currie" touch. I also like flutes, recurrent all along the e.p and vocal cameos which can make a song become  really wicked. The chorus is heady, easy to catch, the flow is perfect for the song and there is not a "déjà vu" impression. About lyrics, the promise is delivered : if we analyse them, we  understand that the title is a reference to 2017's summer which seen Iggy's carreer sink.

And Iggy Azalea is direct cause she already disses at Nicki Minaj in the first verse : "I been making moves, been writing rhymes, been stacking commas" is a clash about Nicki Minaj's ghost writer accusations and "But you, hold up bitch, can you survive the summer" attacks her rival's carreer, which was about to end before Queen came out.

TOKYO SNOW TRIP 🔥🔥🔥

Iggy, your music is really impressive. Tokyo snow trip (9/10) is excellent to dance slowly with sensuality. The bass kills it and the japanese thing in the instrumental is pretty cool. Lyrics are obviously repetitives but it's not too long and it sounds really great, so, good job Iggz.

About voice, congratulations. Her flow is very good and i can feel she worked on her voice that was really annoying. "Bravo" for the whispering, reference to the Whisper song by Ying Yang twins. EXCELLENT.

KREAM FT. TYGA  🔥🔥🔥

It's getting better and better.From Kream's (8/10) introduction, Iggy's deep and sexy voice really fits to the beat. Once again, basses are very good and i really like the background. Gimmicks are well found "Ass / Cash / Bags', and Iggy's flow's headlong. Tyga's flow debit is also very good in this song (i love his voice).
But there's one thing i'm angry about. It's the clip. OK, we got it, you like to show your ass, but this time you've gone too far. If you did'nt see it yet, i did'nt put the link here because i'm not enthusiast about porn. But this is a very good begining, Mrs Azalea.

HEY IGGY 🔥🔥🔥

At the begining, i did'nt really liked Hey Iggy (9/10). But, step by step it became one of the best track of the album. I'm glad to meet flutes again as in Survive the summer. As in the first song, basses & drums are very good and Iggy's flow is just perfect, which deserves to be hilighted. Conversly to her rivals, she's not obsessed with rhymes : the proof is, that in this track, the number of line is odd et some words does'nt rhymes, but it sounds even better. YASSS !!!

KAWASAKI 🤢💩🤢

Why does this arrived … This is a disaster. The instrumental is good as usual but the whole song is a complete and utter nightmare !!!! Lyrics are average and she keep saying "I'm not humble, i'm cocky" during the whole track. This song seems endless because Iggy gives us her depressed voice and lyrics are very repetitives. Kawasaki (3/10) receives the Grammy Awards of the most monotone flow of the year (or maybe of the decade). Luckily the 15 last seconds of the song (the bests) and the motorcycle sounds come close this horrible song. HELLISH.

OMG FT. WIZ KHALIFA  🔥🔥🔥

After the Kawasaki disaster, everything ends well with OMG (10/10). Like the previous songs, we don't get bored of this bass and arab flutes associations (thanks, Smash David). The chorus is excellent, the flow is slow but sounds good for the song : without any doubt, this is the best Iggy's rap record. There's no speed all-time-high broke but just good music and that is all that matters. Wiz Khalifa is not as good as usual but Wiz is always Wiz, so…

VERDICT :

Well, if this was a very big deal for Iggy, she really know how to bounce back. Survive the summer is mature, toughtful, intelligent. There's only 6 track but the vibe is here. There's a real atmosphere in this E.P and the songs (not too long) are really well-glued together : the result is coherent. By the way, i'm glad to see Iggy finally found her own sound : flutes, basses, vocals guests. VERY GOOD. While her rivals would be ready to do anything just to stay hype one more year, Iggy just decided to make good music and it payed off. That's why i give Survive the summer a mark of 8 out of ten. Can't wait to see the whole album to be released.
